Gazelle Lab Application Lessons – Part 2

August 5th, 2011 · No Comments ·

As we continue reviewing applications for Gazelle Lab, we have learned a couple more lessons.

So, I thought, again, I’d share here.

Limitation is a strange animal. It creates focus and structure, but is totally unforgiving.

Gazelle Lab’s limitations include

  1. Capacity. We can only accept up to 10 companies – and even that is a lot to realistically handle – but tiny compared to the need and number of applications we are reviewing.
  2. Resources. Our mentors are awesome. Seriously. But our “product” has to match their interests and skill set. Ditto with investors.
  3. Time. Time is always limited, but particularly in our program. Three months is not six months, or a year, or even two. Three months is three months. And there is only so much you can do to help in that limited time-frame, no matter how efficient or well-intentioned your program is or could be.

What is interesting is that our limitations do limit us, but not the applicants. We had a tremendous set of applicants. A good number will go on to be successful in our community. And we encourage them with our entire hearts.

However, we will only be able to work with the ones that fit into our box. Which is good, but difficult to accept when you truly want to help everyone.
