Feasible vs. Viable

June 20th, 2008 · 1 Comment ·

Yes, another terminology rant.

fea·si·bil·i·ty/”fE-z&-’bi-l&-tE/ noun
capable of being done or carried out
(able to be implemented)

vi·a·bil·i·ty/”vI-&-’bi-l&-tE/ noun
having a reasonable chance of succeeding

One of these words implies more knowledge and effort than the other. I conduct viability assessments every day – I very rarely go through the trouble of a feasibility analysis.

That’s interesting, I think I have a lower threshold for feasibility than viability. If it’s feasible then that just means it could happen, but thinking about viability means thinking about odds and risk.

Thanks for clarifying the definition though, cheers
