I would love to say this job is easy, but it is actually one of the most difficult jobs ever.
I get the opportunity to talk to hundreds of people a month, and bunches of them seem interested in online publishing… most wishing to pursue handling the tasks of writing, editing, moderating, sales and promotions all by themselves.
I’m not against it per-se, but I have to confront some of the myths head-on so decisions can be made with complete data:
- online publishing is not a money-making venture
- as soon as it is profitable, competition shows up in your niche (and sometimes before)
- unless you are out on the fringe, everyone will ignore you
- key partnerships are few and far between
- google news will ignore you, placing more demands on your social media skills
- google will primarily ignore you, placing even more demands on your social media skills
- online publishing only works as a business model bundled, or supporting, something else
If anyone else has any other myths to bust, please feel free to comment.
