What Type of Art Do You Sell?

June 30th, 2008 · No Comments ·

Maybe you don’t sell art, but you can still view your brand as art, right?

When I work with artists, I ask one very telling question: What type of art do you sell? Notice, I did not ask: What type of art to you create?

There can be a major difference between what is created and what is sold in the marketplace.

I will usually restrict the artist to one of only four answers:

  • water closet
  • bedroom
  • living room
  • mantle

These answers force an artist to think about where in the house they would want their artwork placed – and there is nothing wrong with bathroom art, it might be cheap, but must have mass appeal and be interesting enough to keep someones attention for longer than just a minute.

On the other end, a mantle-peice can be a negative. Not all art can the the ultra-premium stuff.

Bedroom art needs broad appeal and accessability. Living room, a niche appeal – worthy of discussion.

So, take a second and tell me… what type of art (brand) do you sell?
